NAICS (North American Industry Classification System)
is a new numbering scheme for describing the line of business or "industry" of a
given company.
How NAICS codes compare to SIC codes:
Compared to the government's 4-digit SIC codes, NAICS codes better describe
some newer industries such as the information sector, the health care sector, and the professional,
scientific, and technical services sector. While NAICS codes provide increased coverage of
some new industries, the overall depth and selectivity of NAICS is similar to 4-digit
SIC codes.
The chief characteristic that distinguishes the NAICS system from SIC codes is that
NAICS codes focus on processes rather than on products. Subsequently, NAICS will contain new
industry sectors, such as "information," which will include traditional publishing industries,
software and database publishing and other businesses that produce information.
The old SIC system is not going away. D&B will continue to support SIC codes through
assignment and maintenance of the D&B SIC-8. To assign an eight digit SIC, D&B currently
starts with the base four U.S. Government and appends a 4-digit extension to refine
the operations of the firm. D&B administers the S&B SIC-8 by adding, modifying, or deleting
additional 4-digit codes based on emerging technologies or changes in the economy. There are
over 18,000 SIC codes which, in most cases, are more granular that the 1,170 NAICS codes.
D&B has implemented a proprietary system
that expands the U.S. SIC code system by appending up to 4 additional
digits to the standard 4-digit SIC code, allowing more specific business definitions .
This expanded SIC system is divided into five levels:
- Main Division - Indicated by letters A-K
- 2-digit SIC codes - Major groups within the main divisions
- 4-digit SIC codes - Specific industries within the major groups
- 6-digit SIC codes - Sub-industries within the specific industries
- 8-digit SIC codes - Lines of business within the sub-industries
In addition, D&B's DUNS numbering system is a widely recognized standard
for identifying businesses among thousands of companies, marketplaces,
and regulatory entities. Companies worldwide use it to link information
about suppliers, customers, and trading partners, providing a
more complete picture of the risk and opportunity in their business
relationships.
D&B business data - with SIC Codes and DUNS # - will help you:
- Build targeted sales lead lists
- Lookup individual company profiles
- Increase sales and marketing ROI
The information in the Dun & Bradstreet database
is gathered and compiled from millions of trade and bank transactions, federal bankruptcy filings
information from business owners, public utilities, and the offices of all the U.S.
secretaries of state. Dun & Bradstreet also scours hundreds of newspapers, magazines,
trade publications, and electronic news services for data.
